Despite predictions for an overall weak performance by bottled water in off-trade volume terms over the forecast period, the on-trade channel in Germany is poised for stronger growth, driven by the growing need for hydration during increasingly hot summers. Climate change is heightening consumer awareness of the importance of adequate hydration, particularly in restaurants, bars, and other on-trade venues.
Bottled water, particularly still water, remains a staple for hydration, but its dominance is increasingly contested by other soft drinks. Sports drinks, juice-based alternatives, and innovative powder concentrates are emerging as competitors, offering consumers hydration paired with functional benefits such as electrolytes and nutrients.
As inflation continues to influence consumer spending, private label bottled water is solidifying its position as a preferred choice for budget-conscious buyers. Private label is increasingly seen as a viable alternative to branded options, and continues to expand its presence on store shelves.

Bottled Water
This category is the aggregation of still bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), carbonated bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), flavoured bottled water and functional bottled water. Bulk bottled water is split out separately. It is defined as packaged drinking water – purified, spring or mineral – that is packaged in a container of 8 litres or larger. The bulk bottled water data types apply to Still Bottled Water and Carbonated Bottled Water but do not apply to functional or flavoured bottled water. Bulk water is classified according to the new Bulk retail volume and Bulk retail value data type regardless of channel of sale: bulk water sold via retail locations and bulk water delivered direct to a consumer’s home is included. Bulk water sold to institutions (offices, schools etc.) remains excluded.
