Cafés/bars in France faces a challenging outlook marked by structural decline, inflationary pressures, remote working and a shortage of labour. Although the period from 2022 to 2024 temporarily boosted consumer engagement, a return to previous downward patterns in terms of transactions and outlet numbers is expected for the forecast period.
Home delivery and takeaway, less prominent in cafés/bars than in limited-service or full-service restaurants, continued to expand for much of the review period but slowed noticeably in 2023 and further in 2024. This was especially so for home delivery, which was hindered by added costs in an unfavourable economic climate.
Bars-tabac (tobacconist bars) will see continued decline over the forecast period, in a pattern already well underway. Rising operating expenses, especially for energy and staff, are squeezing margins, and reduced household purchasing power further discourages out-of-home consumption.

Cafés/Bars
This category encompasses all establishments where the focus is on drinking (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages). While a wide variety of snacks and full meals are offered, it is not uncommon for consumers to only order a drink. As a general rule, establishments deriving 50% of their income or more from the sale of drinks are included here.
